I was fascinated with the idea of giving up a certain degree of creative power to the unknown. As well as allowing for a kind of creative limitless ability for something truly amazing, spontaneous and unpredictable to occur. I began to think about what would allow me to cast this wide net and I arrived at the idea that I could set up a seamless in a public space with a sign that read “free portraits”. Who would sit down? Who was spontaneous enough, fearless? After photographing my subjects I asked them questions such as, “what’s one thing if you told me about yourself I wouldn’t believe?” Other than this and the subject's name I didn’t gather much else. I thought this question added a layer of identity other than knowing just their name. I knew from other projects I had seen, having a consistent composition for the series of images would work nicely together and is why I used a seamless. I shot in Washington Square, Wall Street and Soho. My hope was to form an image of the types of individuals you might find based on the location, in a way, painting a portrait of the neighborhood.
